The Legendary Anime Concludes a 27-Year Era in 2026

It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and included dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in January, once the current storyline concludes, the anime will go on a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will release a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — including more material, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” However, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime had a half-year break that began in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the visuals and let the comic to build a lead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has managed to deliver viewers with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may lead to one episode of the series covering a single manga chapter, with others alternatively handling more material or additional to make up for scheduling.

It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of production, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why classics such as Bleach, and of course itself have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the art can change drastically between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple maximum releasing each annually, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
